The interior jacket is a completely separate jacket and it is like an extremely extremely thin down ski jacket, in fact so thin that it seems like they forgot to put in the insulation so it feels more like a doubled nylon jacket - I write this by way of description, not criticism, since the ultra-thin insulation does seem to work well. Pearl says you can wear the interior jacket on its own. That will never happen. No reflectivity, one small pocket and kind of goofy looking. Any time you want just one jacket you will wear the really nice shell, not the goofy liner and if you are spending $350 for this jacket you probably have several other jackets anyway,all of which are nicer than this liner. Other than a tab at each sleeve and the collar, no integration at all between the two jackets. I do not doubt that this works well in combination, but for the money I would get Pearl's PRO softshell and then Pearl's PRO jersey. Same total $$ but you end up... It is actually two jackets that can be worn together along with a detachable balaclava. I have several other Pearl Izumi jackets and this is the best one by far. Yes it is not cheap, but definitely worth it as it is the last jacket I need to buy. I have gone on a 50+ mile road ride with temperatures below freezing (not to mention the windchill) and I never got cold. The balaclava is wonderful and much better fitting than the other Pearl Izumi balaclava that I have. The pockets up front are perfect for holding my smartphone and the pocket in back has three additional pockets within it. I'm so glad I purchased this jacket and I highly recommend it. Now I have no worries about getting bored riding on my trainer this winter as I will be outside ridding.
