I was slow to adopt the then-new synthetic clothing due in large part to, one, the inherently uncomfortable (hot in the summer and not warming in the winter) nature of synthetics; and, two, a group ride seemed to have a brown stink hanging over it from the synthetics' ability to smell bad like no other thing. But, back then, wool was the prickly creature that was cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter, and kept a civil smell about it no matter when, but it itched too much to wear without a base layer. Which seemed to kinda miss the point to the wool ethic.Smartwool was my first inkling that wool--specifically, merino--next to my skin could be not just an okay thing, but a good thing, a great thing.
